money hand

IncuVest, a Singapore-based investment company that backs startups in the seed stage, has revealed the six companies it has backed in the past three months.

Helmed by partners with investment and entrepreneurial experience, IncuVest functions more like an angel fund rather than a venture capitalist. A large chunk of the money it invests in comes from the partners. Venture capital firms, on the other hand, handles money from limited partners (LPs) and are accountable to them.

Started in 2011, IncuVest received over 1,000 pitches, reviewed over 400 companies, and invested in 15. That’s an investment rate of 1.5 percent. 30 percent of its investments have received follow-on funding.

The firm is also part of the Singapore government’s Technology Incubation Scheme, so that means a large chunk of its deals involve state money.

In any case, here are the six that recently got invested by IncuVest. The firm didn’t disclose the size of the rounds, but they’re usually in the six digits, with or without government involvement.

1. BaseRide Technologies

BaseRide is a cloud-based app for transportation companies to manage, plan, dispatch, monitor, and analyze their operations.

2. Intellect Motion

Intellect Motion develops user interfaces, like motion detection controllers, that interact with all kinds of software. Their flagship product is iMotion, a hand-held controller that uses standard cameras.

3. Matchimi

Matchimi is a mobile app that connects part-time workers with jobs. Its system has an algorithm that detects the preferences of workers. Its goal is to help workers find jobs they like and reduce hiring cost for employers. LifeOpp is similar, except that it is web-based and also targets full-time workers in the service industry.

4. Smartmissimo

This startup is building PowerDot, a wearable sports muscle stimulator. It helps amateur athletes train more effectively. It lowers the cost of electrical muscle stimulation to make it affordable not just to the pros. Previously named SmartMio, the startup raised US$122,000, exceeding its target of $50,000.

5. Gamera Networks

Gamera uses video and chat to promote mobile games and engage or retain their users.

6. Monkimun

Monkimun is a language learning service for kids aged two to six. It aims to make learning fun through games. It has signed 10 distribution deals. 12 more are on the way.

A number of the other startups IncuVests backs are familiar names. There’s Rainmaker Labs, Inverted Edge, Chope, and GoCoin.

There are also startups that are below-the-radar, but by no means inferior. Cinarra Systems raised a US$4.5 million series A round to help telcos monetize the data they own. FeiHu is a developer and publisher of mobile and social games. Last but not least, CutCue is an ad testing system to help advertisers measure the potential impact of an ad in another culture.
